Ashridge Estate is a 2,000 hectare (5,000 acres) area of the Chiltern Hills with beech and oak woodlands, commons and chalk downlands. These very different landscapes each support a rich variety of wildlife, including carpets of bluebells in spring, rare butterflies in summer and the fallow deer that rut in autumn.

This Meet Up at the National Trust’s Ashridge Estate was a half term affair, our children came along, explored, climbed and played together. Myself, Kitty and Ozzy were joined by Helen from Actually Mummy and her two children, Katie from Randomnest and her three, Keri-Annie from Gingerlillytea and her two girls and Penny from Being Mrs C and her daughter. It was a lovely mix of people most whom hadn’t met each other before.

It was really nice to see the children playing together, compromising on naming the den they discovered, the boys favouring ‘Ninja Den’ and the girls ‘Fairy Den’. Both parties were happy with the title ‘Ninja Fairy Den’ and imaginations run riot. Bugs were hunted and fallen trees climbed whilst the grown ups sat on the picnic blankets and gossiped, err I mean discussed very important blogging matters.

Keri-Anne and her eldest snuck off to explore the remaining few bluebells and me being me, stalked them.

We finished the picnic with ice-creams and headed to the buttercup meadow behind the Ashridge Estate tea rooms. A more mellow contrast to the fallen tree climbing.

Katie and Keri-Anne’s eldest girls commandeered cameras and went off on a little photo walk together. I found is fascinating watching them taking photos, the angles and mannerisms. I couldn’t help but wonder which bits they have inherited from watching their mothers with the cameras. Total pro’s the pair of them.

Thanks to those who came for a lovely day, the weather gods were on our side once again. Here’s hoping they remain on our side for the Gardens of the Rose Meet Up on Sunday 7th June!

PS. Sorry to Penny as I appear not to have hardly any photos of you – next time I will completely pap you to make up for it 😉
