This weeks HDYGG photographs were taken at Brooklyn Botanic Garden on my New York trip last week. At 52 acres, Brooklyn Botanic Garden is a green oasis in the large city, a horticultural gem that back in the late 1800's was a mere ash dump.

It's a beautiful place to spend a day, it was lovely to see the Autumn (or should that be 'Fall') leaves starting to accumulate on the ground. As with all gardens this would look very different as the seasons change, how I would like to return to see the cherry blossom avenue in Spring time.

Part of Brooklyn Botanic Garden is The Children's Garden.  Established in 1914 and the first of it's kind in the world, this dedicated space is for the enjoyment and horticultural learning of city children aged 2-17 years, who sow, tend and harvest their own crops. How I wish there were more spaces like this over here in the UK *grumbles about how horticulture should be part of the National Curriculum*.

Another lovely part of the botanic garden is Discovery Garden. Aimed at children we still managed to learn things as adults. There's plenty to do, I especially loved the 'collection' drawers, a big cupboard with pull out drawers where children can stash the things they find around them in the gardens - seeds, acorns, pine cones and so on. there was a little girl having a blast playing with them whilst we were there so obviously I didn't take a photo of it, but trust me when I say it looked so good!

In the Conservatory (Glasshouse to you and I) there was lots to see too and unlike the Glasshouses in the UK it actually felt cooler inside there than outside (well it was 35 degrees outside!)

The Japanese Hill & Pond Garden was a relaxing space to enjoy. As we walked round the pond I spotted an elderly gentleman  doing yoga in the viewing pavilion which come Spring will be covered in cherry blossom *happy sigh*. As with everywhere we visited last week, Brooklyn Botanic Garden wasn't without a noticeable security presence, can you spot the guard below?

And a final taste of home in the 'Shakespeare Garden'. Nothing like a bit of wicker to make a girl feel homesick!

Thank you for bearing through a photo-heavy post and apologies to those who came to join in last week and hadn't realised that I was away. So favourites from the week prior are:  Katie's Autumnal garden offering, Rosie's Autumn colours of Normandy, the same Autumn colours but in a ditch of beauty from Doris, Carie's productive garden and some childhood memories from Suzanne.
