Nordic design, food and the concept of Hygge all come into their own at this time of year. The Dala horse is a traditional carved wooden toy which also symbolises Sweden. Traditionally used as a form of currency, the horses were later given as gifts. They’re often painted red with decorative harness and make a beautiful ornament to adorn a shelf or mantel.

If you don’t strike flea market gold and find one, the design is very simple (traditionally, children used to carve the horses when they returned home from school). It translates easily into linocut, embroidery and other crafting projects. Perfect for those handmade Jul gifts.
