Oh Mammy! what have I let myself in for ?!
Oh Mammy!s Music Meme is in it's third week now so I thought I'd better get my arse into gear and join in the fun! It's easy to do so head on over to Oh Mammy! to take a peek. I've enjoyed doing it this week so I think it'll be a regular thing for me - a big thank Oh Mammy! for such a super-dooper meme.
Strap yourselves in as I take you on a journey - a festival journey, over the sea to the lovely Isle of Wight...
Last year my teenage daughter twisted my arm into taking her to Reading Festival on a mother-daughter-bonding-session. at least that's how she sold it to me, the reality was more rain, mud and thousands of screaming booze fuelled teenagers shoving each other all weekend. Great fun though - honest guv.
So this year my eldest son Wombat asked if I'd take him to the Isle of Wight festival as he is a huge Foo Fighters fan and they were head lining one night. Accompanying us was his friend, a girl friend and as he so tactfully put it 'there's nothing to worry about as her girlfriend is going too'.
Obviously I was the cash cow / booze mule but I overlooked this as I was to have a pre-schooler free festival weekend! As you can imagine there was much drinking involved - although mainly by me it has to be noted...I worked on the theory that if I had orange juice with my vodka then at least I wouldn't get scurvy and it counted for 1 of my 5 a day - something that lacks at a festival full of fast food and dognuts!
There were a few band timing clashes and although we all wanted to see Chase and Status mashing up one of the stages I managed to convince 'da kidz' that we should make 5 minutes to catch Iggy Pop. They were all so spellbound by this wrinkly, topless, ageing rocker who was taking no prisoners with a fantastic set that they refused to move to go on to Chase and Status at all! And when Dave Grohl came out to join Iggy well they all went mental!
The highlight though and the reason I am writing this was PULP. I have been a fan of them forever. I saw them many moons ago at Hereford Leisure Centre which wasn't the most glamorous venue in the country but small and intimat-ish. PULP also happened to be on right before the Foos too which meant that we had snuck right down to the front ready for them to come on.
I have been to many gigs over the years but this was the best by far. Dusk was falling and Jarvis rocks on stage with a 3 bar fire on the go and glass of wine. I screamed at one point (a la Beatles fans of the 60s stylee). Words cannot describe how amazing it was but to be stood with my sons arm round me both shedding a tear in 'Something Changed' and sharing that moment is possibly even more amazing than giving birth to him. He's my son and a lovely young man to know - and he's bigger and stronger than me and held on to me at the ned as I got washed away through the crowd on a crowd surge as PULP rounded off with 'Common People'.
Here's my photos from the PULP set - I am very proud of them too !
