Viva la Physical Format – Beautiful CD’s

The Doves I know, I know, I’m at risk of sounding like an oldster. First the books  and now the music. But I care not – I am loud and proud on this one – physical format music forever! That feeling when you buy a new cd – ahhhh! It’s the getting home and admiring the cover. . . Radiohead - Hail to the Thief

Mogwai Mr Beast

It’s listening to it whilst opening up the case and removing the sleeve. What’s inside? Maybe it’s the lyrics

Badly Drawn Boy

Mercury Rev Maybe it’s amazing artwork. Radiohead - Hail to the Thief Maybe it’s the ‘thank you’s’.

Either way it’s usually a band you love and you want to see what they have added to their already great music for your perusal.   My argument for physical format with music does not fall foul of the ‘well it’s more convenient’ camp. For a cd can be brought home, touched, loved and enjoyed and then uploaded to the computer / iPod / generic mp-whatever player. It’s the best of both worlds.

Now there may be doubters reading who’s stance is ‘Why buy a whole album when I can buy just the songs I love for less? It gives me greater choice!’ To you I say ‘SILENCE!’ Stop! Think! There are tracks on every album that any of us have bought where’s there’s a gem of a track that one would not have discovered had it not been for the listening to the whole album.   You download a track and you get the music, you buy a cd and you buy the music and get the cd, the artwork, the whole tactile experience. And my how tactile they can be. . .   Spiritualised

  3. Ah now you know I love you but on this we shall not agree. Unless you’re totally engaged in music therapy (in which case vinyl and an old-fashioned record-player are vital) then there is absolutely no benefit to having to listen to a whole album of one band, and then get up to change the disc every 40 minutes.

Spotify! Playlists for whatever your occasion – flick one switch and you’re set for the whole evening = more time for eating/drinking/dancing/snogging (delete as appropriate).

  4. I totally agree with you. Like you say you can still have the album on your ipod or computer, and you have a CD as back up in case your computer crashes or ipod breaks. I love looking through the sleeve notes, especially reading the thank yous – they can be an eye opener!

  5. I love the artwork but mostly reading about the artist and making more sense of the lyrics when they’re in the written word. Well, sort of, mostly. And I am old enough to remember 7″ and 12″ and the LP. I still say that’s ‘a nice record’ and my 7yo corrects me!

  6. Well, you already know that I agree with you whole heartedly. Give me real “stuff” over its digital version any day. X

  8. Yeah, its nice to have something tactile to hold, it feels like you actually own something, rather than a blooming digital file.

I used to enjoy the sleeve notes and artwork or posters with vinyl LP’s….and remember coloured vinyl and picture discs !!!

  9. Myyyy, what amazing taste in music you have, my dear ;)

Couldn’t agree more, dude. It’s a rather smexy experience to peel off the wrapping from a brand new CD, and without doubt, the best stuff is always a little hidden treasure you wouldn’t have normally found without the CD

Superb. Where will you go next?! Not laptops versus pen and paper?! *clings to laptop*

  10. Someone somewhere once said that a home without books is a home without a soul. Well, the Daddy D and I bare our souls through our books and our music; both are on proud display in our living room. It’s wouldn’t be quite the same if we greeted our visitors with an open laptop and an itunes library…..

  11. With you all the way, there’s much more fun and excitement with bringing something home/it landing on the doorstop rather than seeing the download bar complete!

  12. I have a large bag of CDs waiting to go to the charity shop at the mo, but still seem to have far too many on the shelves. I agree with you – they are lovely things. The artwork, the physical act of handing over money and getting something in exchange. Much better than downloading. You might appreciate checking out my friend’s band the Shee. It’s folksy, funky, lovely Scottish music – which might not be your thing – but their last CD was called Murmurations and they hand-designed 2000 different covers, each one with a different formation of starlings on it. Just beautiful :)

  13. Nice selection of music you have there. I must admit we got rid of alot of cd’s before moving and put them on the hard drive. My passion is vinyl and find it impossible to part with any. I agree, so much though goes into artwork on albums and the inner sleeves /booklets. It’s such an importance part of the whole package ;-)
